South African-born Charel Schreuder has already done many things in his life. The former game farm owner – who is actively involved in martial arts, diving, cycling, archery, swimming, fishing, and photography – has also been a diamond and jewellery dealer, and is currently working in London as a commodities trader. With such a wide range of interests, it’s hardly surprising that he has never found time for his true desire – a round-the-world motorcycle ride – until now.
Late in May, Charel will be ‘downing tools’ for a while, and beginning a new adventure that will take him to six continents and approximately 90 countries on a BMW R 1200 GS Adventure. This motorcycle ride could last up to five years and Charel will be raising funds on behalf of the charity, Motorcycle Outreach, which delivers
“In the summer of 2007 I was at the MotoGP race at Donington Park in the UK and BMW Motorrad had a display of all its latest bikes. It was there that the seed was planted to do a trip around the world, but there had to be a purpose behind the trip so after some investigation we decided to support the Motorcycle Outreach charity. We have named our venture ‘Global Bike Travels’, so that wherever we go on two wheels, we can promote Motorcycle Outreach and raise funds to go towards sustainable healthcare logistics.”
Charel, who has been riding motorcycles since 1984, has purchased a new R 1200 GS Adventure especially for this trip, but has had plenty of experience on dual-purpose machines back home in South Africa.
