RoadRUNNER: 9 Days in Europe, Early Snow in Austria
Written by: Neale Bayly

Day 7 Running from the weather.

"Layer up" was Peter's advice as we set out for a loop up around a local pass road above Meran the following morning. The weather forecast was predicting rain and cold, so we headed off bundled up for a day playing in the cold. Throwing us for a loop, we got extremely lucky for the first few hours as we experienced glorious sunshine, quiet roads, and the usual majestic scenery that we were getting used too. Back in Meran a few hours later amongst apple orchards and wineries, we picked up some members of our group who had stayed behind and got on the road for Serfaus, a famous ski town in Austria.

With most of the pass roads above 1800 feet closed by early snow, we stayed low and arrived in Serfaus early to rapidly dropping temperatures that were already down into the '30s. No one seemed to mind though,
as we enjoyed some of the best hospitality of the tour from Peter's good friend Brigit and the usual top shelf accommodation.

Day 8. Ski lifts and hiking boots are the order of the day.

Waking to softly falling snow and white snow capped mountains all around us, we decided to keep the bikes parked for the day and find some alternative entertainment. This came in the shape of a cable car ride through the heavily falling snow to the top of a nearby mountain for coffee. An afternoon hike out of the village up to the snow line followed with Harry, one of the solo riders in the group. With seven straight days of challenging riding behind us, there weren't too many complaints at taking a day out of the saddle. And, being stuck in a quaint Austrian ski town for the day isn't anything that's going to win you sympathy with your friends at home.
