Sam Manicom, one of the original BMW globetrotters, has just published his third adventure travel book about the drama, action, passion, disaster, and the pure adrenaline buzz of motorcycle overlanding. Distant Suns describes his adventures in the vastness of Africa and South America, and will be available this autumn. The book is being launched at the world famous ‘Ace Cafe-London’ on Saturday, November 1st.
Back in 1991, when Sam made up his mind to go around the world by motorcycle, there were two small problems – he didn’t have a bike and he didn’t know how to ride one either. However, a few weeks later he had passed his test and treated himself to a new BMW R 80 GS, having decided to spend a year riding the length of Africa. As things turned out, this evolved into an eight-year, 200,000-mile
Sam eventually returned to the UK in 2000, by which time he had been on the road for eight years and visited 55 countries. After writing about his adventures for motorcycle magazines and newspapers, he self-published his first book – Into Africa – which described his first trip to ‘The Dark Continent’. The book received high acclaim from reviewers and sold to overlanders and ‘armchair travellers’ all over the world. Sam’s second book – Under Asian Skies – detailed his travels in Asia and the Middle East, and completed the account of his first four years of travelling on his trusty BMW boxer.
