The concept of a really long ride inspires many motorcyclists; the ever-changing scenery, meeting diverse people along the way, variations in roads, the simple or complex challenge and joy of the journey. Whether it is a coast-to-coast dash, a multi-nation odyssey or a grand GS adventure far from civilization, the long ride is part of motorcycling folklore.
For Australians, the ultimate challenge is the 18,000 mile ride around the coast that is for many, the journey of a lifetime. True, the distances are vast, the weather variable and the topography as different as you would get within one nation, but it is the massive stretches between pockets of civilization that present the greatest challenges.
For 58-year-old
Joe had read about the rise in the number of young Australians that suffer from depression, that in many cases progressively gets worse and leads to suicide. He decided that he was going to do something to make people aware of the disease, and if he could save one life it would make his journey worthwhile. Youth suicide is on the increase – not only in Australia but also in many countries throughout the world.
Joe wanted to reach out to youth and communities across Australia and was convinced that his BMW R 850 C was the perfect mode of transport on which to achieve his goal.
