Jamie James Stops by Carolina Motorsports Park for a Ride

Ex-AMA Superbike Champion, Jamie James, paid a visit to Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina, recently to blow the cobwebs out of his JJP racing Yamaha R6. Cutting hot laps on the re configured racetrack, Jamie was attending a Palmetto Motorsports Club day, which is unlike any other track event. With both cars and bikes sharing the track for the weekend, thankfully not both at the same time, the old mantra “four wheels bad, two wheels good,” goes out of the window with this new innovation. Maximizing the weekend for both car and motorcycle club members, the cars run three rotations for their various groups, and then motorcycles then take to the track for their session.

While this potentially could be hazardous to put novice and experts together, the low volume of riders using the track makes it the perfect track weekend. Without having to fight through a pile of riders every session, the added bonus of sharing a track weekend with our four-wheel friends is they don’t crash and bring out the tow truck or the ambulance. If someone does have an off track excursion, they simply alert the staff to sweep the track. It certainly forced me to change my perceptions of car drivers, as they are a very cool bunch.
The people you find at this sort of event aren’t the typical poseurs with their huge car payments spluttering around town in their choked up, high performance machines. These guys are out there thrashing the living daylights out of these cars and having as much fun as the rest of us.

The lack of crashing they do also means very little track time is lost and having attending a couple of weekends now I can only applaud the format. With Jamie immediately finding the Alan Wilson designed 2.23 mile, fourteen turn racetrack very much to his liking, he set about embarrassing the rest of us wannabes before loading his R6 up and heading home. Full of positive things to say about the track and the facility, Jamie is very interested in coming back to CMP to continue the fun. With big changes already taking place and a host of innovative plans ahead, Carolina Motorsports Park is the best kept track secret on the east coast. And the Palmetto Motorsports Club is one of the coolest deals.
