On the evening of May 8 and into May 9, 2009, a devastating flood struck Gilbert, West Virginia. This is one of the cities that host Off-Highway Vehicle riders who come to enjoy the Hatfield McCoy Trail System. This community gave us the opportunity to have a world-class trail system and has accepted our sport with open arms.
County and state declarations of disaster have been made and Presidential proclamation of Federal disaster is anticipated within the next 48 hours. Approximately 4,000 homes have sustained significant damage or are completely destroyed, in Mingo County. There are four other counties in both West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky that also sustained significant dwelling and business losses. There are several areas which are still impassable. The National Guard, US Air Force, the Salvation Army, and the American Red Cross have been called upon to assist the area.

In addition, the businesses in town suffered tremendously as did both of their schools. The roads in town will need extensive repairs, including replacing bridges. Total estimation of cost is not available as assessment of damage is still ongoing, but will likely be in the millions of dollars.
We need to step us as an OHV community and assist this town that gave us the benefit of a doubt. A relief fund has been set up to assist the citizens of Gilbert rebuild their homes, businesses, and community.
