Of all the gear I wore this year testing motorcycles around the world, I think the Taichi RSJ256 Racer Jacket has to be one of the coolest, most stylish jacket’s I’ve worn or seen anyone wear. Making me feel like I was leaving my World Superbike or Moto GP team in the paddock every time I went for a ride, it not only looks good, but also has some great features to go with these looks. Intended as a lightweight, warm-weather jacket, it is perfect for those stinking hot days when it’s tempting to leave the protective gear off. Slipping on easily with the T-DRY mesh liner, even when dripping with sweat, it is not heavy either, and comes with a couple of small-vented areas in the shoulder area that are accessed with a small zipper. There are two more vents in the upper arm area on the front and rear of the jacket to allow a little extra breeze to flow. It’s not as efficient as a fully vented jacket, but on cooler evenings this was a plus.

With CE armor on the shoulders and elbows, it also has a removable back protector, and you can add a chest protector for a small additional cost. The outer shell is made with nylon with a Teflon HT coating and will keep light rain or moisture out for a while. There is also a 3M reflector on the back for safety, and you can buy the jacket in white if you want more visibility than the one pictured here. It’s also available in a black/silver combination.

To ensure a neat, snug fit, the RSJ256 has adjusters on the upper arms and forearms, and flex action side panels with waist adjusters to trim up the mid-section before take off. And one of my favorite features, a neoprene-lined collar ensuring no rubbing or chaffing around the neck area. The quality of the jacket is first class with solid stitching and robust materials both inside and out. There are also a couple of zippered pockets on the sides where you would expect them, and a small, passport or wallet-sized inside pocket. This is also secured with a zipper. Once you have the jacket on, you can adjust the sleeves at the bottom, which is a thoughtful touch as you can put race gloves over them, or loosen them to let shorter summer gloves ride up underneath.

Retailing for $209.95, it’s well priced for a slick, stylish lightweight jacket that also offers some levels of protection from both the elements and the road. Log onto www.taichimoto.com for more info and ordering details.
