I have always had a good sense of direction, rarely lose my bearings and almost never get lost (no fair to ask my wife). But until I got a new Garmin Zumo 550 this spring I had no idea what I was missing. Despite my prior resistance to all the hype I have finally given in and have to admit this GPS thing is no fad and really does add a new level of convenience, security and confidence to traveling that no printed map could hope to compete with, especially for a motorcyclist.
Quite simply the Zumo 550 is a top of the line unit that does it all and it does it all in a water resistant package specifically designed to be exposed to the harshest elements Mother Nature can dish out while mounted on the handlebars of a motorcycle. The claimed water resistance level is very impressive, rated as “IPX7 waterproof” it apparently can be submersed in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes and emerge unscathed. I haven’t tried that yet but I did ride one miserably
In addition to the serious weatherproofing you can tell a lot of two-wheel experience went into the design and form factor of the motorcycle specific unit. In fact, every aspect of the Zumo was designed with the motorcyclist in mind. The large UV resistant display screen is glare resistant and easily readable while all the left hand oriented controls on the console and the touch screen are large, easy to find and can be operated even with heavy gloves on. The console features a trio of easy to use screens to display all the pertinent information in large easy to read digital gauges. Toggling back and forth between information is a matter of a simple touch to the screen putting total trip miles, average speed, maximum speed, compass, clock, altitude, media player, phone menu, estimated time of arrival to your destination and even a handy fuel gauge literally at your fingertips.
