Anybody who has ever owned a motorcycle has surely heard of Battery Tender. In fact, the Deltran Corporation has been making and selling millions of them for so long, that most people who talk about any battery charger, use the term Battery Tender to describe one – just like they say Kleenex, when they mean a disposable tissue. Only a Battery Tender isn’t a single use product. It will last for years. I bought one on the day I bought my first bike over 15 years ago, and it’s still going strong.

What separates a Battery Tender from other “trickle chargers”? Simply put, the Battery Tender will put a constant charge into any lead acid battery, and when that battery is fully charged, it will automatically drop the voltage to a maintenance/float level at a very low current, and maintain that for an indefinite time period to keep the battery at full charge. But unlike other so called “trickle chargers”, the Battery Tender can’t overcharge the battery and damage it.

As I said, my original Battery Tender is still going strong, and I bought a second one when I got my second bike. I keep it on my motorcycle batteries, constantly, even during the riding season. Then about every two weeks or so, I hook one up to my car batteries, to keep them in top shape as well. By using the device throughout the year, I never let my batteries get weak, which can lead to a battery becoming resistant to accepting a full charge. By doing it this way, my batteries last longer. While friends of mine get only 2 or 3 seasons out of their motorcycle batteries, I get 4 or 5 seasons. And my wife’s car battery lasted 6 years. So I’ve saved a lot of money over the years by extending the life of my batteries. And I don’t worry about getting stranded by a dead battery while out on the road.
This year, I decided to treat myself, and get a 4-bank Battery Tender unit. Basically, it is like having 4 single units combined in one compact, light weight housing. That means that one device will charge four separate batteries at the same time. OK, I’ll admit it. I’m LAZY. I no longer want to have to keep switching my single chargers around to the different vehicles. I’ve got the two bikes, and two cars, and this unit means that I can keep each one hooked up with their own electric leads, and forget about them. And I know many of you readers have other toys besides your motorcycles, like ATV’s, snowmobiles, riding mowers and tractors, or personal watercraft in your garage, and need to keep those batteries fresh for both the offseason, and the usage season. This 4-bank unit is perfect for keeping all of those batteries fresh.

With this unit, you only need to tie up one garage outlet, and just run leads to all the vehicles you want to maintain. The device, which only weighs 3 pounds and can even be mounted on a wall, comes with a 6-foot, 3-prong AC power cord, four sets of fused battery clips, and 4 sets of quick connect ring terminals. And you can order optional 25 foot extension cords in case some of your vehicles are on the other side of the garage. Each one of the banks has its own set of indicator lights, which tells you what state of charge each vehicle is in; yellow flashing (power on, no battery connected), solid yellow (charging), green flashing (charged enough to use), or solid green (fully charged, storage mode). All Battery Tenders are spark-proof and reverse-polarity protected for safety.

So if you want to maintain your toys, and extend the lives of their batteries, the 4-bank unit is the easiest and most effective way to do that. The 4-bank unit sells for $249.95, and you can order optional 12-foot extension leads for $9.95 each, 25-foot leads for $13.50, or get a 4-pack of 25-foot leads for only $49.95. The unit will pay for itself in just a few years with the extended battery life you’ll get from all your vehicles.

This will make a perfect gift for any powersport enthusiast, as well as a great treat for yourself. And if you don’t need the 4-bank unit, Battery Tender offers 2-bank versions and of course a single unit as well. You can also get a 10-bank unit, but if you need one of those, and aren’t a powersports dealership, well then I’m just too jealous to even think about that.
