Turquoise waters frame a rocky coast. I gaze at the sea hoping to see my first Humpback Whale. I have travelled more than 2000 miles to take in this picture perfect scene. Musing over a cappuccino at the Herring Choker Cafe near Baddeck, Nova Scotia, I realize that, although I have ridden seven days to get here, for me this was a journey that began half a century ago. Having left my Canadian home as a child, I have returned many times to visit. But this is the first time I will see my native land from the saddle of a motorcycle. It is also my first visit to the maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

The Summer heat can be brutal in North Carolina where I live now. Dreaming of relief from 100 degree days and the possibility of discovering something unknown about my own heritage, I loaded up my new 2011Triumph Sprint GT and headed North. My first destination is the small fishing village of Janeville, New Brunswick where my cousin Judy lives. She will be my travel companion on this maritime adventure.

The Triumph Sprint GT is the perfect machine for two up touring. That’s good, because we have plenty to see. As a TV producer for more than thirty years, I don’t go anywhere without a camera. I’ve mounted a portable high definition Flip UltraHD video camera on the bike to capture and share my memories on this long overdue motorcycle tour of my native land.

West Virginia Bad Dream http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qqXkGCgaA0
Shooting video with my bike mounted Flip Ultra HD along Highway 220 through the Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia was the highlight of this day. I took so much time shooting and was having so much fun that I almost did not make it through West Virginia in one day. The video soundtrack on the movie is my brother Kevin singing his original composition “Bad Dream.”

Massachusetts to Maine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwu-cDLaadM
I covered a lot of highway with the Triumph Sprint GT today, travelling through New York State, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. The highlights of the day included visiting LL Beane in Freeport and eating fresh caught lobster in the small fishing village of Cundy's Harbor, Maine.

Acadian Historic Village http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yZWNBinbw4&feature=related
The Village Historique Acadien is an historically correct re-enactment of Acadian life in Caraquet, New Brunswick, Canada's only bi-lingual province, telling the story of "le grande derangement," the British attempt to rid Acadia of its' French settlers. Many of them did leave and went south to Louisiana. Not suprisingly, the Cajun and Acadian cultures bear a remarkable resemblance which includes musical traditions.

Kayaking Baddeck, Nova Scotia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2QWyor5sgc
After many days on the saddle of the Triumph, my cousin Judy and I were both ready for a day off the bike. A sunny blue sky afternoon in a touring kayak followed by a large portion of steamed mussels made a perfect day. The highlight of our sea kayaking tour around Baddeck Harbour was our guide singing Gaelic songs to us. That was truly music to my Celtic ears.

Nova Scotia Ferries http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nA2psGtBc6s&feature=related
If you ever feel like your life is just too busy, hectic and hurried then you might enjoy the slower pace of a ferry ride. There are several ferries running daily in Nova Scotia. I rode my Triumph onto the the LaHave Ferry. This one uses a cable to cross from LaHave to East LaHave.

Cape Breton Island &The Cabot Trail http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B69PY5tgibQ
Cape Breton Island and the Cabot Trail were easily the most memorable part of my journey and among the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The Cabot Trail is widely considered Canada’s most scenic drive. Here you can see gorgeous ocean vistas with wildlife ranging from Humpback Whales to Bald Eagles as well as Moose and Black Bears.
