With the countdown continuing to BMW Motorrad’s international GS Trophy event in Tunisia, the hunt for competitors is already gathering steam in the various countries that are participating in this exciting inaugural event. With Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan and the USA having committed to field teams of riders in October’s GS Trophy, the selection process has already begun – in fact, BMW Motorrad Japan and Spain have already chosen the riders for their respective GS Trophy teams.

Selection for the Japanese International GS Trophy team took place June 7th and 8th on the occasion at the third Japan GS Challenge, staged in Asama Bokujo on a site where the Asama volcano racetrack previously stood. The surface of the track is volcanic ash, which is so soft that once a rider is stuck, there is almost no chance
to restart. Success there demands not only good riding skills but also the ability to remain calm and choose the right lines.

To make the selection process fair, the organizers provided R 1200 GS Adventures for everyone to use. Before the actual riding tests started, participants had just 10 seconds to lift up a fully fuelled R 1200 GS Adventure that was lying on its side. Out of 60 challengers, 36 riders managed this task.

The second competition was to ride a fully-fuelled R 1200 GS Adventure equipped with standard tires as far as possible along a specially built course, constructed over ten sections. The winner would be the one who travelled the furthest, and in the unlikely case that many participants made it to the finish line, then the winners would be decided by the fastest finishing times.
