BIKES: SPEED Girls Go To Riding School - Holly
Written by: Holly Cheung

Editors Note: This is the fourth in a seven part series by the SPEED Girls as they attended the Cornerspin School for a weekend of riding instruction. Holly works in the Interactive Department at SPEED.

Holly….
It’s my Dad who actually inspired me to ride. He has ridden motorcycles most of his life and seeing the passion that he has for two wheels has always made me want to share it with him. So, when I heard the girls from the Speed office were going to spend a weekend at Aaron Stevenson’s Cornerspin School in Spencer, NC, I jumped at the chance to join in. The first day at his facility was a little nerve wracking, as most of us didn’t know what to expect, and when we first arrived, the first thing I noticed was a very, very steep hill. I thought to myself, “I hope we don’t have to go down that thing,” (which was nearly impossible, considering the track was below the hill). I didn’t expect us all to jump on a bike so fast, but as soon as we got on we were going like kids on training wheels.
The passion for motorcycling runs in Holly's family, now shared not only by her dad, but by Holly as well. (Photo: SPEED) ยป More Photos

The first day was an awesome experience as we learned to use the clutch, throttle and brakes, and even lean a little in the turns! Driving a stick shift car definitely makes the shifting and clutching a little easier on a bike. Our instructors worked closely with us, and we performed different drills that built on our skills. By the end of the day, it was all starting to make sense.

On day 2, we were practically pros (ok so not really, but it felt that way). We were able to ride most of the day in many different courses that Aaron created for us. This meant we had to shift gears, lean left and right, and use both brakes correctly. While performing these drills, Aaron and the instructors would stand beside the track encouraging us to open the throttle more, brake later, lean more, and by the end of the day we were flying. Thank you SPEED, Neale, and the whole Cornerspin team for allowing us to experience what it’s like to ride a motorcycle in a totally safe and un-threatening environment. Oh, and it’s also pretty cool to brag about your motorcycle bruises to boys who look at you with that Oh So Jealous look in their eyes.
