After our successful first test at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama with our long-term project R6 in stock trim, it was time for some modifications. With winter coming on,we decided to step it up and take it to the next level. Talking to Doug Crawford at JJP, we decided the next step should be dressing up the R6 in some of the accessory items available from Yamaha. Then we could spice it up farther with a slip on pipe, GYTR Hi-flow air filter, and a smaller front sprocket from our friends at Vortex. We would stay on the excellent Michelin Pilot tires for the next phase and slip through the air a little cleaner without the mirrors and turn signals in place.

With these coming off first, Doug got to work replacing the stock levers with a very trick set from Harris. Fully adjustable they also fold up in the event of a tip over, a situation that could easily save the day during a track event. Coming in shiny black they complimented the bike nicely, and while he was at this end of the bike he added the Russell braided stainless steel twin racer front brake line kit. A similar kit was added for the rear brake but the brake pads were left alone. With his experience racing Yamahas, Doug reckons they are as good as anything we could put in there so we leave well alone.

While he is mounting the rear sets, removing unwanted parts, and checking over the bike, I wander around the workshop. Filled with all manner of exotic race bikes, customer specials, and Jamie’svery trick custom Yamaha R1s, it’s a gear heads dream. With the walls lined with trophies from his AMA Superbike days, old race leathers and photos of great racers Jamie has battled against, the JJP workshop is a very special place. Looking at pictures of a young Freddie Spencer, a Colin Edwards who looks like he isn’t even shaving yet, and Scott Russell grinning like a cat with a plate of warm milk, it’s humbling to think Jamie has run with and beaten all of these World Champions many times in his career.
