George Bryce : The Five Spokes of Racing - Part 1
It is easy to have a million questions for someone like George Bryce especially when it comes to his decision on coming back to the NHRA and what enticed him to build a motorsports facility in South Georgia.

When Bryce left the NHRA back in 2008 many comments were floating around that he would never return. Truth was he was waiting for those unique set of circumstances to encourage him to make one big return.

“The way I said it was if I were to come back it would be a unique set of circumstances to allow me to come back. First of all we've already been racing everywhere you can race. We raced with big boys, little boys, girls, no money, lots of money, sponsors, no sponsors, and after doing it for twenty years I realized there is a unique set of criteria and a unique set of rules to make it be what it needs to be to make a successful effort.” says Bryce.

And those rules? Something a lot of race teams should consider. “I say there are five spokes in the wheel to a race team to be competitive and number one is you have to have the best rider to be a constant winner. Number two is you got to have the best motorcycle. Number three is you got to have the best engine program. Number four is you got to have the best group of people behind you and lastly number five is you have to have the money to afford to race.”

In order to get those five spokes Bryce knew he needed talented racers and shocked everyone when he posted a request on some websites and face book with strict requirements of what he was looking for in a racer.

“I put up a pretty serious request for drivers and it got a lot of press, a lot of ink, a lot of good stuff, and a lot of bad stuff but I ended up with a hundred responses it was incredible. People called in and said I am the guy I can do it I got this and we would do an interview process and about half of them were wrong, they could not do everything they said they could do.”

In the end Bryce found two no nonsense and serious racers to help complete his race team. Scotty Pollacheck and John Hall, two racers who not only have years of experience racing, took Bryces school, and own their own business allowing them to have the time and money to race in the NHRA.

Many reason brought Bryce back to the NHRA, “Coming back I realize now in 2009, 2010 and 2011 that there were a lot of people my team, my friends, my employees at Star Racing, my opportunities with AMC, the sponsor from Europe, John Hall's and Scotty Pollacheck's dreams to race NHRA were never going to come true because I was being really hard headed about the rules and staying home learning how to play golf and race pro mod in ADRL.”

That sponsor from Europe for those who have questions “Who is sovereign?” when taking a glance at those colorful bikes. It is a sugar distributor.

“My friend from Hungry is a sugar distributor, probably one of the largest distributors in Europe. He has fourteen million customers and supplies sugar by 5000 tons per shipment that is 240 eighteen wheelers of sugar per order. He loves racing and he loves motorcycles. His team came to my school in 2010 from Europe and did really well then last year asked me to come tune, we won six out of seven races and won the European Championship. He doesn’t speak English, I don’t speak Hungarian, we speak Pro Stock Motorcycle.”

With Bryces five spokes in order there certainly is a confidence within the team that the success they are looking for is right around the corner and after the fourth race of the season at Old Bridge Raceway in Englishtown, NJ they can admit they have dramatically improved.

“I expect to be very strong by the end of the year. My team owner, sponsor, and partner from Sovereign has a goal of a top four finish in points for the year and I think that is achievable. It would be a great comeback for us since we missed 34 races and a lot of stuff has happened in those 34 races.”

After the fourth race of the NHRA season Bryce is a spot away from having both riders in the top ten with only six races left before the countdown to the championship begins. With riders who continually beat the record best times race in and race out as well as qualifying he has a chance of a successful return to racing this season.

Next installment George Bryce sat down to explain the new motorsports facility he is building in South Georgia.

Stay tuned...
