AX: Bowers In Control As Series Travels To Wilkes-Barre
The sixth round of the AMSOIL Arenacross Championship will air LIVE on SPEED on Saturday at 9:30pm ET.

A great weekend of action in Cedar Park, Texas, has set the tone for an exciting weekend for the sixth round of AMSOIL Arenacross, featuring Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross, from Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday and Saturday night. The Wilkes-Barre stop also signifies another landmark moment for AMSOIL Arenacross as the second live broadcast of the season will be showcased on SPEED, beginning this Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. ET.
This weekend will also mark the second visit to AMSOIL Arenacross by the Road to Supercross namesake Ricky Carmichael. The five-time Monster Energy Supercross Champion will once again be on hand to spend time with the teams and riders, but most importantly, the fans. Carmichael will be available for autographs following Friday and Saturday night’s races and also at the Monster Energy Fueled track party beginning Saturday at 6:30PM E.S.T.
Last weekend in Cedar Park, Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki presented by Maxxis’ Tyler Bowers captured overall victories on both nights of action, giving him seven wins this season and extending his points lead to 60 points. In addition to Bowers’ continued impressive efforts, Cedar Park also signified the strong return of Team Faith/FLY Racing’s Jeff Gibson. Just one week after missing the fourth round of the season for the birth of his first child, Gibson returned with more excitement than ever and after finishing third overall on the first night, he became the fourth different Main Event winner this season en route to fifth overall.
Motosport.com/JBR/Spinechillers Racing KTM’s Nathan Skaggs also posted one of his best weekends of the season with two nights of consistent efforts. Skaggs just missed out on the overall podium during the first night of action in fourth, but came back stronger on the final night to finish third. His performance at the fifth round of the season moved him up to sixth in the championship.
Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki’s Zach Ames solidified his second position in the standings with back-to-back runner-up overall finishes. Team Faith/FLY Racing KTM’s Kelly Smith held on to fourth in the championship with sixth and fourth-place efforts across both nights and now holds a slim three-point lead over his teammate Gibson.
Missing in action on Saturday night was championship contender Michael McDade. The Mosites Motorsports Kawasaki rider crashed during the Main Event last Friday and was forced to retire from competition as a result. After further evaluation, McDade was unable to race on Saturday feeling the effects of an injury to his wrist. While his status for this weekend still remains uncertain, he still maintains possession of third in the championship, 98 points behind Bowers and four points ahead of Smith in fourth. As one of the three overall winners this season, many will eagerly await to see if McDade will be able to return to the track in his home state of Pennsylvania.
Only one round remains for riders to qualify for the inaugural Race to the Championship, which will feature 10 riders in a four-round showdown to crown a champion. A significant portion of the field looks poised to secure their positions this weekend, but the battle for the 10th and final spot currently features a tie between KMS KTM’s Dave Ginolfi and BWRengines.com Honda’s Kyle White. Motosport.com/JBR/Spinechillers Racing KTM’s Steven Mages sits only 10 points behind this duo in 12th. All three riders will be sure to take advantage of every opportunity on the track this weekend as they fight for their shot at the Race to the Championship.
This weekend’s return to the East Coast also signifies the fourth and final round of the Western Regional Arenacross Lites Class Championship. The competition through the first three weekends has produced a close battle for the title, with seven riders sitting within 29 points of one another and 32 points available on the weekend. Currently, Fun Mart Cycle KTM’s Michael Willard sits in control of the championship, but just six points separate him from Pennsylvania native Steve Roman in second and 12 points to TZR Woodstock KTM’s Scott Zont in third.
Last season in Wilkes-Barre, AMSOIL Arenacross made its highly-anticipated return to Northern Pennsylvania with two nights of action. On Night One, former champion and beloved AMSOIL Arenacross veteran Chad Johnson captured the win, while Bowers grabbed the victory on Night Two. In the Arenacross Lites Class, Willard made it a clean sweep of the weekend, which he hopes bodes well for him in his bid to claim the Eastern Regional Championship this weekend.
The Wilkes-Barre round will also mark the AMSOIL Arenacross debut of the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge. This will be a special showcase of some of the fastest young minicycle riders on the planet, all of whom are seven or eight years of age. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these talented young riders to compete on the same track as their AMSOIL Arenacross heroes.
Two nights of action inside Mohegan Sun Arena kick off on Friday, February 8, and Saturday, February 9, beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET. Live broadcast coverage of Saturday night’s competition will air exclusively on SPEED, beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET.
