Editors Note: This is the fourth and final in a series highlighting the restoration of a 1924 Harley-Davidson by the Wheels Through Time owner Dale Walksler.

Part IV….

Riding up through Maggie Valley to complete the final part of our rustoration series, the town is alive with motorcycle activity. Groups of cruisers line hotel parking lots and I do a lot of waving at oncoming bikes. What a contrast to the snowy day we pulled the 1924 JD Harley Davidson out of the semi-truck! The sun is shining and the trees are covered in a thick growth of fresh leaves.

As I pull into Wheels Through Time, I notice the JD prominently parked in front of the museum. Wearing fresh rubber since I was last here, she looks mighty proud in the warm afternoon light. Dale breaks away from his duties, and we quickly get to starting and riding the bike. A quick bump down the slope, outside the front door, proves fruitless, so Dale resorts to kicking. In no time, the bike is thumping away and warmed up enough to ride. For the next half, to the delight of the many onlookers hour, Dale makes circuits around the museum
grounds.

He has made sure all the lights are working, fitted a new battery in the battery box and installed the tires. Dale is pleased to note the brakes are working fine, and the clutch and gearbox are behaving as they should. Not content to ride around the flat grounds, we are soon heading for the steep gravel trail that runs up the mountain behind the museum. Now the onlookers really have a surprised look on their faces, as Dale slithers and slides his way up the impossibly steep looking trail.
